Structurally Based Therapeutic Evaluation: A Therapeutic and Practical Approach to Teaching Medicinal Chemistry
نویسندگان
چکیده
In keeping with the mandate for more critical thinking, problem solving, and relevance in basic pharmaceutical science courses, the Structurally Based Therapeutic Evaluation (SBTE) of drugs is a new concept that has been introduced in the medicinal chemistry courses at Creighton University. Like the medicinal chemistry case study, this concept emphasizes the relevance of chemistry to the practice of pharmacy, and demands its inclusion in the therapeutic decision making crucial to the provision of pharmaceutical care. The unique feature of the SBTE approach is the inclusion of seven therapeutic criteria that must be addressed when translating chemical and structural understanding into predicted pharmacological action and therapeutic potential. These criteria, which are the same ones used to evaluate drug therapy decisions in clinical case studies, include: drug history/drug response, patient compliance, current medical history (CMH), past medical history (PMH), side effects, biopharmaceutics, and pharmacodynamics. Students are required to apply the SBTE approach to solve patient-related therapeutic problems on homework assignments, in voluntary recitation periods, and on examinations. SBTEs are summarized for each class of drugs and the students are encouraged to find additional criteria and to supplement existing SBTE criteria based on their understanding of concepts from other courses in the curriculum. The practical impact of medicinal chemistry on the practice of pharmacy becomes increasingly apparent with every new SBTE.

Teaching Medicinal Chemistry to Meet Outcome Objectives for Pharmacy Students
Pharmacy practice demands that pharmacists draw upon competencies and outcomes that enable them to perform the functions that support the delivery of pharmaceutical care. Many pharmacy schools have established specific outcome objectives for their students based on published pharmaceutical care functions, practice skills and revised accreditation standards. To meet these objectives, students mu...

متن کاملTeaching Therapeutic Reasoning Through the Case-Study Approach: Adding the Probabilistic Dimension
Case-studies are vehicles for implementing problem-based learning in the curriculum. The main objectives of problembased learning as achieved through case studies are to instill in students principles of self-learning and critical thinking. Pharmacotherapeutic case studies are also used to integrate knowledge from different pharmaceutical disciplines (medicinal chemistry) and illustrate their c...
متن کاملThe Effect of System-Nested, Genre-Oriented, Structurally-Mediated Model (SGSM) of Writing Instruction, and Swalesian Model (SM) upon Iranian Learners’ Writing Performance: A Comparative Study
The purpose of the present study was first to offer a tentative solution to the problems observed in writing pedagogy in Iran by devising a more comprehensive approach to genre-based writing instruction. In the second phase, a quasi-experimental research design was adopted to determine how effective the model was in writing instruction, compared with the traditional, product-oriented approach, ...

In the present work, a series of structurally novel benzocyclobutene derivatives were identified as general anesthetics through the loss of righting reflex (LORR) experiment on mice. Our initial efforts found compound 1a with a fused four-membered ring on the 2,3-position of the phenol ring could significantly improve the safety profile. Further SAR study revealed that small hydrogen bond accep...
